COVID Testing FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
AYSO Region 46 COVID-19 Guidelines for L. A. County

Q: Why is AYSO implementing these guidelines?
A: AYSO is simply following the Orders issued by Los Angeles County. These are requirements we must follow in order to play soccer right now. You can find the Guidelines at Reopening_YouthSports.pdf (lacounty.gov)

Q: Who is affected by these guidelines?
A: All players 12 years of age and older as well as all coaches, assistant coaches and any other volunteers who have sustained close contact with the players.

Q: What do I do if I am vaccinated?
A: If the player, coach or volunteer is vaccinated, then no weekly testing is required. Proof, in the form of a copy or photo of the vaccination card should be sent to [email protected].

Q: What do I do if I am not vaccinated?
A: If the player, coach or volunteer is not vaccinated, they are required to get tested weekly for COVID-19 and provide proof to the designated team representative each week.

Q: What tests are valid for the weekly testing?
A: For weekly testing, the PCR test and rapid antigen test are both acceptable. Only the antibody test is not allowed for this purpose.

Q: Am I exempt from the weekly testing if I tested positive for COVID-19 recently?
A: Yes, for 90 days from the start of symptoms or the first positive test. Proof needs to be provided to the collection email. Here is an excerpt from the official Order – “Persons who show proof that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or that they have recovered from/completed isolation for laboratory confirmed COVID-19 within the past 90 days should not be included in periodic COVID-19 screening testing if the person is asymptomatic. Screening for not fully vaccinated persons who were previously infected with COVID-19 should start 90 days after the first day of symptoms or from the day of collection of first positive test (if they were asymptomatic).”

Q: Where can I find a testing site?
A: No-cost testing is available at local health centers and select pharmacies including CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens and Walmart (in partnership with Quest Diagnostics). A helpful website is Find a Health Center (hrsa.gov)

Q: What happens if a player tests positive during the season?
A: First, notify Scott Cooper, Safety Director for Region 46, at [email protected] and copy Steve Grover, Commissioner for Region 46, at [email protected]. Any player, coach or volunteer who tests positive during the season will need to isolate per LA County guidelines and all other exposed players, coaches and volunteers are required to quarantine (unless they are vaccinated). Everyone exposed to the positive case at an AYSO practice or game, regardless of vaccination status, including players younger than 12 years old, will need to have a weekly negative test result for two weeks from exposure to the case and must test negative prior to competitions.

Q: What if I was exposed to a positive COVID-19 case outside of AYSO?
A: First, notify Scott Cooper, Safety Director for Region 46, at [email protected] and copy Steve Grover, Commissioner for Region 46, at [email protected]. Any non-vaccinated player, coach or volunteer who was exposed outside of AYSO must quarantine for 10 days per current guidelines. All vaccinated individuals or those who have tested positive for COVID-19 within the past 90 days, do not need to quarantine.

Q: Do I need to test by a certain day each week?
A: No. However, if a weekly test with a negative result is not completed prior to competition, the player, coach or volunteer who does not show proof, will not be able to participate in that game or any subsequent practices until proof is shown. It is recommended to test early in the week each week to avoid any issues.
