Thank you for volunteering to be a Referee! We could not have a season without volunteers like you. Below is a step by step guide to signing up as a volunteer and registering for a class. It might look scary but it really isn't.

Due to the delay of the season, we are offering the Referee Course Online in conjunction with a short “in Person Companion Course”

The In-Person portion is Saturday Sept 18th from 8.00 am – 11.00am

Note: You MUST complete the online course called  “Regional Referee training” BEFORE you can come to the In-Person session.

The process is two fold (plus a lot of little folds).
  1. Become a “Registered Volunteer” just like coaches, assistant coaches and board members. This is necessary to prove to the state and community that one is safe and trained to be in charge of kids.
    1. Login to your your account
    2. Go to My Account
    3. Click the Volunteer tab
    4. Click Find Volunteer Roles
    5. Select the Role you want to volunteer for, make sure it is the correct division
    6. After filling out the forms, bo back to the Volunteer tab
    7. Check Risk Status
    8. Scroll down and click on Renew & Update
    9. Click Submit
    10. You will receive an email from American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO). Please follow the instructions and go to the Sterling Volunteer website and complete the Background check.
  2. Become a Referee. This is a 2 part course which is a lot better than the 8 hour days we previously had.
    1. Online section – do at your own pace but must be completed before the "on field session"
    2. Field session, known as the "Referee Companion Course which is led by certified instructors (3 hours)

First, if you haven't already login.

Once logged in, click on the AYSOU tab on the home page.

This will open up a new browser window. Click on login at the top right. This should AUTOMATICALLY log you in with your existing AYSO account information. If it does not, use the same username and password as on www.ayso46.org

You may see this for a few seconds…up to 20 seconds sometimes.

At this point check that you can see your name in the top right (not your spouse) and check you can see the option for “Online Courses” and “In-Person Courses” as shown below. You might not see ALL the options. As long as you can see YOUR NAME…and the two types of courses, you are set to go. Click on “Online Courses”.

This next part is to become a Registered Volunteer. You have to complete 3 modules within the Safe Haven folder. (If you have already done this…then EXCELLENT)
Open the Safe Haven folder.

Within the Safe Haven folder you will see the 3 modules you have to complete. At the end of each module, you will have a chance to save a certificate. You SHOULD do this, because this system is not 100% reliable.

Also in the “Online Courses” main folder, you will see a folder called “Refereeing Courses” …which is the main reason you are here.
Open that folder!

See below…..

You need to take Regional Referee Training. You also need to download the Laws of the Game. I recommend going to www.theifab.com to download all the laws and changes and some great learning resources.

Here is a link to a direct download of the current Laws of the Game.  https://www.theifab.com/laws-of-the-game-documents/?language=all&year=2021%2F22

There is also an IFAB app for your phone which is actually VERY GOOD. ( IFAB is the International Football Association Board….they write the Laws.)

It is worth noting that you can do this Regional Referee Training at your own pace. (You can start and stop…and pick up where you left off)
There is a test at the end where you need 100%. You MUST complete this. (It’s open book…so it’s good)

Finally the real fun bit… you must register for the In-person session (3 hours) which is in the Referee Instructor Led Courses. We are giving you multiple options of days to attend.

This session is where we will go over whistles, flags, offside, more offside and meet your fellow referees and ask many questions.

Then you get the next page below….

See below….. When the page opens, click on “Sessions” and then wait for the screen to load up with choices.

Scroll down until you see the course in Canyon Country on Sept 18th
Click "Register"
The sessions at La Mesa Jr High 8.00am till 11.00am.

Phew…That’s about it. Thank you for volunteering and refereeing.
